What is a Centrifugal Juicer

The name originally comes from the centrifuge that the food goes down and then is pulped by force which, is propelled by an extremely fast moving blade. The blade is more often than not flat and spins in a flat manner. It is that blade that separates the juice that is to be consumed from the pulp that is to be dumped.

Centrifugal juicers are usually less expensive than masticating models (also known as slow juicers), because they produce less juice per item of food. For example, a masticating juicer will produce much more from leaves than a centrifugal, which mainly shreds without extracting much juice.

The blade juices the produce very fast, but the speed of it and the heat create oxidation, which means that some enzymes and nutrients get lost in the process. It also give the juice a much shorter shelf-life than masticated juice, and so if you are looking to keep a juice until later that day/night or beyond, a centrifugal juicer isn’t suitable.

There are many reasons why a centrifugal juicer may be the way forward for you.

Speed

Most good centrifugal juicers will have two settings, although some only have one. Essentially, the first setting is a a slower one that is for greens and softer fruits, and the faster setting is for harder foods.

If you get up at 7am and need to leave the house by 7:15am, then a centrifugal juicer will provide you a quick juice fix before you run out the door. This also is great if you have kids and want to get them a quick juice in the morning.

Budget

It is no secret that centrifugal juicers are more budget-friendly than their masticating counterparts. They do have shorter life-spans and shorter warranties, but if you’re looking to get started in juicing without making a substantial investment, then a centrifugal juicer can suit your needs perfectly.

Space

They can be quite compact, and if you have limited kitchen real-estate, then you should be looking for a model that isn’t too large. Another thing is that if you travel a lot or need a portable machine, you can find ones with travel handles that are very handy.

Obviously, you want to be informed on what are the things to look out for when choosing a machine. There are a few things that we always look at first when thinking of getting a new juicer.

Chute

The feed chute is the portal where you send the food down to be juiced. How large it is will determine a lot of how it will be to use.

Usually the power of a centrifugal juicer can handle to pulp an entire fruit (depending on the toughness) in one go, but if it won’t fit in the chute, then you will have to cut up into pieces. A large centrifuge is a really big bonus in that it requires less time, which is one of the primary reasons for purchasing a fast juicer in the first place.

Noise

It’s pretty much unheard of to find a ‘quiet’ centrifugal model, but some of them are just way way too noisy. This isn’t the first thing you should look out for by any means, but it’s important to take this into account, as many people who want a ‘fast’ juicer also get up pretty early in the morning! So be aware that a very loud machine could wake up anyone who is nearby.

Warranty

Warranties for centrifugal models are traditionally not as good as their masticating counterparts. This is because there are many hot and fast parts that are interchangeable, and so you should always check this before you purchase. This is something that can really set you back if you go for one of these fast juicers. If a particular part breaks down, then the entire thing may become null and void, so it’s important to just check out all of the possibilities beforehand.

Quality of Parts

Another reason why these guys are that little bit cheaper than masticating juicers is that nearly all of the parts are made from plastic. The bottom of these juicers are usually quite thick and heavy, as the vibrations from the fast blade is hot and dangerous, so it needs a steady edge.

The main thing that you want to look out for in a centrifugal juicer is general sturdiness throughout the machine. Give it an ol’ shake and do the usual pat on the surface that you would a car when you don’t really know what you’re supposed to be checking for! Just do that, it’s fine. If it bends, it’s bad.

When we went through the various models on the market, there really were two stand out competitors that are (in our opinion at least) far and away the most sturdy, versatile and quality juicers on the list.

That said, there are many different versions that will give you the desired effect, and so here are our best centrifugal juicers of 2017.

1. Breville 800JEXL

Ok so let’s cut straight to the chase here. This is NOT what we’re talking about when we talk about how ‘budget friendly’ centrifugal juicers are. This is an expensive machine, coming in at over $300. That being said, it is worth every single solitary penny.

Firstly, it is stainless steel and GLEAMING. It’s a gorgeous looking machine but it is quite large. Actually no – it’s VERY large. It will take up a lot of your kitchen counter. If that doesn’t bother you and you have the space, then wonderful. If you’re really tight for space, then this maybe isn’t the juicer for you (even though you should just Make the space for this beauty!).

It has a 3 inch wide centrifuge. It is mammoth. You can just chuck any ol’ bad boy into that thing and it’ll juice it without an issue. Even if you have carrots or other hard vegetables, this beast will just shred through it with ease. With the harder veggies, the technique is to slowly push them down and you will see it work its magic quite soon afterwards.

With the leafy stuff, it’s better to put this in with the hard stuff. As mwe mentioned before, masticating juicers are much much better at leafy greens, and so if you want to juice them, throw them in with something a bit more solid. Otherwise, they will just get stuck and caught in the blades.

It’s so easy to use and will devour anything that you put into it, so you have nothing at all to worry with this juicer. It is so quick, and therefore the noise isn’t long at all, the power it has is immense and the juice here is AS GOOD as juice from a top masticating juicer. It’s a wonderful appliance.

Breville BJE820XL

I mean how does one even differentiate between the top two here? Both are just so so so good in each and every aspect of juicing that to say one is better than the other just is a falsehood. Can we just give both of these 5/5 please? Thanks!

It has a distinctive chrome finish and it’s a very attractive appliance to look at – much better than the majority of the juicers on the market.

Again, it’s very big, but if you have the space it will repay you tenfold. It has interchangeable discs which makes the clean up so much easier, and it also has a very handy and efficient pulp catcher. Cmon, that is a huge time saver.

If there was a reason why we put the 800JEXL at number 1 and this at number 2, it is probably because you literally cannot tell the difference between the juice from the 800JEXL to a masticating juicer’s juice. Here, you will get a TEENY TINY bit of frothing, but once you master the 5 speed settings, you can minimize the amount of froth that appears. It will also produce nearly the same amount of juice that a masticating juicer will produce, which is pretty neat.

The 1200W engine behind this behemoth is whopper. You simply are not going to have a more powerful juicer on the market. It manages the changeable 5 speeds easily, and it’s just a joy to behold at times. I mean, it can be loud obviously, but with a motor this powerful it should be A LOT louder. Overall, it’s a gem and an investment to your home and your health.

Breville BJE200XL

Ok, so now we have gotten rid of the two big boys that are by far and away the best in the centrifugal space. Now if you’re a person who is looking to either get started juicing or want to upgrade their juicer, this is the machine for you. The Breville BJE200XL is a wonderful machine. It doesn’t exactly look as impressive as the first two, but it is a very high quality machine for its price point and the juice yield it gets is seriously impressive.

Firstly, it’s very powerful. It will easily juice anything that you put into it. It will have no difficulties whatsoever. If you HATE coarse juice (I do), then you should get this. You will have smooth & consistent juices for the length of your time with thie appliance.

You will get some wet pulp, as you will with any centrifugal juicer, but the quality of the resulting juice itself is very good, if not as good as the two above it. Still, you certainly won’t have many complaints from it – it yields a high quality juice all the time.

The absolute BEST thing about this is that it is SO QUIET! I mean, it’s audible for sure, but like this is one of the quietest fast juicers we have used here. This feature alone makes it 101% worth the money you will pay for it.

Breville BJE510XL

Have you noticed that Breville kinda have the monopoly on centrifugal juicers? It may seem that way, but they don’t really. They do, however, have a near monopoly of the BEST centrifugal juicers. They are the experts here, and there’s good reason why all of their models are right up there at the top of the table.

The BJE510XL (alright guys, wanna come up with some catchier names some time please?) has a wide 3-inch chute, which is great for munching, chomping and ultimately juicing any fruits and veggies without much chopping on your part.

Much like the BJE200XL above it (again with the names!) it will produce a slightly foamy, but very delicious juice, and the yield is quite good for a model at this price point. The only thing about this machine is that with its high number of removable parts, it will take a bit of getting used to at the beginning when it comes to clean-up, but once you get used to it, it’s not that tough or arduous at all.

Jack Lalanne Pro

The only non-Breville on our list, and a Breville nearly beat it to 5^th, but we decided that this guy just deserved to be there. It’s affordable and it is a hard worker. You can depend on this to produce high quality juices all of the time. The clean up is EFFORTLESS (honestly it is so easy), and it’s an attractive beast that won’t take up too much room.

It probably yields as good a juice as the first two juciers here, which is incredible, and it’s not overly loud. The only thing about this is that in order to work out the intricacies of this appliance you will need to consult the manual for a brief time until you’ve got the hang of it.

I know, I know. NOBODY got time for that. But please, don’t let that put you off here. It’s worth just having a quick nose through and understanding how it works. It’ll pay off. WE PROMISE.

Last but not least, it is made from stainless steel. It’s very reliable and very sleek. Thumbs up.

And there you have it! We have given our two cents on the matter, and that is that. I think that you can pretty much take 1 and 2 as the absolute, no h olds barred, without a shadow of a doubt best centrifugal juicers on the market, and then if you don’t have the cash to spend on them, any of the remaining three will leave you very satisfied also. Basically, what we’re trying to say here is that you can’t lose with any of these machines.
