10 Reasons Why You NEED Kale For Your Life

kale heartKale is great. We all know this. Just look at it. It is leafy green and just has the LOOK of something that is certain to improve our health if consumed regularly.

In an altogether not shocking conclusion, nutrition experts from across the world say that kale is a great food for every person.

Kale has gotten a lot of hype recently. It went from relative obscurity to getting a place high in the pecking order of hipster foods, alongside avocado, spinach and poached eggs.

By the way – if you get a juicer for leafy greens you’ll find it SUPER EASY to get more into ya.

Don’t let the hype deter you though, it is REALLY good for you. We run through a few of the absolute best things about kale and why you should all be incorporating it into your diets asap.

What is kale?

kaleJust a brief bit of science stuff before we get to the good bits. Kale is a member of the cabbage family. Cabbage is its bro. Broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts etc are also its bro.

Kale can be curly or smooth, purple or green. It’s most commonly found in curly form.

1. Kale helps you detox

It is full to the brim with fiber and sulfur. These are essential when it comes to detoxifying your body from head to toe but most importantly it aids liver health and helps it get some of the bad stuff out extra fast. Hooray for that.

2. It is literally the most nutrient dense food on the planet

One cup of raw kale contains an absolutely stupid amount of nutrients. It has the following:

  • Vitamin A: 206% of your recommended daily allowance (going above in vitamins is like totes fine)
  • Vitamin C: 134% of your recommended daily allowance
  • Vitamin B6: 9% of your recommended daily allowance
  • Vitamin K: 684% your recommended daily allowance
  • Magnesium: 6% your recommended daily allowance
  • Copper: 10% your recommended daily allowance
  • Potassium: 9% your recommended daily allowance
  • Manganese: 26% your recommended daily allowance

All of that good stuff comes in a THIRTY THREE calorie package. I mean come on. That is ridiculous.

3. Kale Has Very little fat

Kale unsurprisingly has very little fat, but the little fat that it does contain is omega-3 fatty acid names alpha linoleic acid. This is very good fats and something your body will love.

4. High Cholesterol HATES Kale

Kale is high cholesterol’s worst enemy. They are not bros. Cholesterol is important to have in the body as it has lots of great functions (such as the creation of bile) but high cholesterol isn’t great.

Kale contains bile acid sequestrants, which is a brilliant way to lower the level of cholesterol in the body. This can get into the system even faster from juicing. An important study had findings that kale juice consumed daily for 12 weeks lowered high cholesterol by 27%, as well as having an antioxidant effect.

5. It’s the best way to get Vitamin K

Our bodies adore vitamin K. It is one of the most important vitamins, as it is a main provider of blood clotting. It binds calcium from certain proteins, and we need that clotting to live healthily.

Kale is the best way to get more vitamin K into your body, as one single cup contains nearly seven times the recommended daily amount. That’s amazing! So much in such a small amount can only be a good thing.

6. Kale is a weight loss aid

There is lots to love about kale, but it being a weight loss friendly food has to be right up there with our favourites. It has very few calories but it still is quite a bulky food that will help fill you up fast.

It is a great strategy to lose weight to eat bulky foods that fill you up without packing in the calories. Another way is by eating foods with a low energy density, which kale has.

Eating kale will ensure you don’t go hungry and don’t go over your calorie intakes for the day, helping you lose weight. I think we can all agree that is a good thing.

7. Kale is a cancer fighter

We hate cancer. We have all been touched by cancer in varying degrees and it sucks. That’s putting it lightly. Sulforaphane is something that has been proven to fight cancer, and there is lots of that in kale.

Kale and other cruciferous veggies lowers the risk of several different types of cancer, but there haven’t been lots of studies on this as of yet. That being said, it has been shown to contain substances that fight cancer, albeit in clinical and animal tests and not in humans to any great degree YET.

8. Kale makes your brain better

A brilliant book called 50 Shades of Kale (Harper/Wave 2013) shows that kale has the sufficient healthy fats to make your brain healthy. Healthy fats such as plant-based omega-3 ALA is what is needed in your brain, as your brain is mostly fats anyway. It will help with depression and diabetes. The latter causes incredible harm to the brain and kale is a good way to fight it.

9. It will improve your MENTAL health

We mentioned briefly in the point above that kale helps with depression, but let’s look at this in more detail. The reason why kale makes us be more optimistic and happy in our day to day life is because it has a large amount of carotenoids. Carotenoids are vital for brain health, both physically and mentally. But hey don’t take our word for it – Harvard’s recent study also backs it up pretty well.

10. Finally – Kale will help you pee

Kale promotes urinary health in a HUGE way. This will ease the flow of urine, as well as keeping away bladder cancer. This is due to vitamin A, which helps the linings of the urinary tract. We get that it’s not the most luxurious thing, but god damn it is important in your day-to-day lives!

Conclusion

And there you have it. We love kale and you should too. We’re gonna take a risk of getting sued by a fast food company and give you this brief but important message: EAT MORE KALE.
